About Oslo By Heart

After years of designing itineraries and scripts for other tour companies, I created Oslo By Heart to offer a more personal, authentic experience.

The tours are built around what I actually find interesting about Oslo: the art, the history, the architecture, and an honest picture of what life in this city is like - the kind of detail you only get from someone who lives here.

Groups are kept small so there is room for real conversation rather than just covering ground. Every walk is led by me personally.

Tours are either in English or German, my native languages.

Oslo By Heart is the result: a tour built around what she actually finds worth knowing about this city.

Reviews

Romy did a fabulous job! It was just like walking around the city with a close friend, having a wonderful chat about all things Oslo! I was the only person that signed up for the tour and was delighted she ran the tour with just one. She was very knowledgeable, answered all my questions, and we kept a comfortable pace. Her tour is also more intimate - there is not following someone with a headset or flag!

Like walking around a new place with a very knowledgeable friend! Romy gave me a real sense of the place, Norway as a country and the Norwegian people and how Oslo had come to be this truly amazing, beautiful city that has married the old with the modern and nature with architecture. Will definitely be back for more with Romy the next time we are in Oslo.

A well educated, highly knowledgeable and enthusiastic art historian who provided a detailed, informative and energetic, but not difficult, walking tour of Oslo. I highly recommend Romy's Oslo Walking City Tour and encourage adding the Vigeland Park extension with Romy.

Romy was very warm and knowledgeable of Oslo's history and rich art scene. Loved going through the artwork at City Hall. Given the time she's spent living in other countries, she had some great perspectives on Norway's culture vs other European cities. We also enjoyed a private tour, which is always the best way to learn about a city.

We were only in Oslo for one day so we felt precious about our time in the city. The tour was exactly what we were looking for - informative, authentic and fun. We learned so much and would highly recommend this tour!

Amazing tour to the Oslo city. After a few, this is by far the best one. The guide Romy transmitted passion and kept us interested all the tour through.

Romy was a friendly and knowledgeable guide, who gave an interesting and informative insight into Oslo past and present - it felt like walking around town with an old friend. There were many sights of interest but the most impressive for us was the Vigeland sculpture park, beautiful and breathtaking all at once.

On a stormy and rainy afternoon in Oslo, we met Romy, our guide in the city who made it feel sunny and bright while walking us through the amazing history and historic background of this Nordic land and its proud people. Thank you Romy, you're one of a kind!

FAQ

  • How are Oslo By Heart tours different from a free walking tour or a large group tour?

At Oslo By Heart, we skip the megaphone and memorised scripts. Our tours are capped at small numbers to feel like a walk with a local friend. We focus on the heart of Oslo, blending major landmarks with hidden gems and stories of daily life and culture that you won't find in a standard guidebook.

  • What is your cancellation policy?

We understand plans change. You can cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before the tour start time for a full refund. Cancellations made less than 24 hours before the tour are non-refundable. If Oslo By Heart needs to cancel due to unforeseen circumstances, you will always receive a full refund or the option to rebook.

  • Where does the tour start?

Our standard meeting point for our public city centre walking tour is at the “Skapning av Iddefjord” (Creature from Iddefjord) sculpture in front of Deichman Library’s main entrance. We send you a message with exact instructions and a google map link the day before the tour.

  • What happens if I am running a few minutes late for the start of the tour?

To respect the time of all our guests we start promptly. However, we know travel can be unpredictable. If you are running late, please message or call us immediately. We will do our best to tell you where the group will be so you can catch up.

  • What is the maximum group size ?

To keep the experience intimate and "from the heart," we limit our public groups to 10 people. This ensures everyone can hear the stories, ask questions, and navigate Oslo's charming side streets easily.

  • Do you offer tours in languages other than English?

Yes, all tours we offer can be booked in English or German.

  • What happens if it rains or snows?

In true Norwegian fashion, we believe there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing. Our tours run rain or shine. However, we may have to cancel in the case of extreme weather.

  • What should I wear?

Comfort is key! Oslo has some hills and cobblestones, so sturdy shoes are a must. Even in summer, a light layer is smart as the breeze from the fjord can be cool. In winter, wear weather-appropriate clothing, like wool layers and boots with good grip.

  • How much walking is actually involved?

We usually cover about 3 to 4 km over a period of 2 to 3 hours. We maintain a conversational pace with stops for storytelling and photos. If you can walk at a moderate pace for a couple of hours, you’ll find our tours very manageable.

  • Can I book a private tour for a family or corporate group?

Absolutely! We love tailoring "Oslo By Heart" experiences for private groups. Whether it’s a family reunion, a birthday, or a team-building event, we can customize the route and duration to fit your needs. Send us a message for a personalized quote.

  • I am a solo traveller. Will I feel comfortable joining a group?

Definitely! Many of our guests are solo travelers. Because our groups are small and the atmosphere is informal, it’s a very easy way to meet fellow travellers while exploring the city.

  • Are your walking tours wheelchair or stroller accessible?

Because our route dives into the historic heart of Oslo, we navigate several areas with uneven cobblestones and a number of stairs.

For this reason, our current tours are unfortunately not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers. We want everyone to have a safe and comfortable experience, and the terrain makes that a challenge.

  • Are children allowed on the tour?

We love meeting young travelers. However, because we keep our group sizes very small to ensure an intimate experience, all spots are priced equally regardless of age. Please also keep in mind that my storytelling focuses on history, art, architecture and social culture, which could be less interesting for children.

  • Are pets allowed on the tour?

Pets are allowed, but keep in mind that while the tour is primarily outdoors, we might occasionally step into a building where indoor access for pets isn't always guaranteed. If you are booking a private tour with a dog, get in touch. We can usually adjust the route to stay 100% outdoors.

  • Does the tour include food or entrance fees to museums?

The tour fee covers the guided experience itself, but not food or drinks. No entrance fees are required. We recommend bringing a bottle of water. If time allows, and the group is interested, we can make a quick stop for refreshments on the way.

  • Do we just see the main tourist sites like the Opera House and Parliament?

While we cover the Must-Sees in our city tour, we can also show you some of the hidden gems of Oslo. Alternatively, our Grünerløkka tour explores a different side of the city entirely - see our tours page.
