Christmas Walking Tour with the founder of Oslo By Heart (in English)

2 hours and 15 minutes

Easy

As the days get shorter, the coziness of winter increases. On this tour we’ll not only discover the heart of Oslo, but also some of Norway’s finest Christmas traditions.

We begin this tour close to the Norwegian National Opera House, one of my favourite highlights of the city. Our meeting point is the “Creature from Iddefjord” (Skapning fra Iddefjord) sculpture outside Deichman Bjørvika Library.

As we move along the waterfront you will learn fascinating details about the comprehensive urban development that has shaped the Bjørvika district, and which includes the Munch Museum, the ice covered Opera, the winter floating sauna landscape, and other buildings that might surprise you.

We will then make our way towards the Kvadraturen district. Here we will dive a little deeper into the history of the city and how it came to be known as Christiania for just over 300 years. We will learn more about traditional Norwegian Christmas food at Oslo's oldest restaurant.  We will ascend to the highest point of the Akershus Fortress grounds for stunning views over the Oslofjord. On a sunny day, you will even be able to spot the famous Holmenkollen Ski Jump.

We will then carry on towards the heart of Oslo, Karl Johan street, to discover how the city and country are governed, educated and entertained; the Norwegian Parliament, National Theatre and Royal Palace among others. We will stroll along the Christmas market where you will learn more about Norwegian Christmas traditions.

During the final part of the tour we will head towards Oslo’s magnificent City Hall, a hidden gem. We end the tour in the Aker Brygge district, where I will give you some great tips for visiting cozy restaurants, Oslo's best Christmas menus, and further places of interest during the darker months. We're right next to the Nobel Peace center and National Museum, and some great cafes.

If you choose the Vigeland Park add-on, we will board the tram at Aker Brygge to visit the world's largest sculpture park envisioned and created by a single artist. The extended tour will conclude after the park visit.

Why choose this tour?

As an independent guide, I've created my own tours, driven by my passion for Oslo’s rich culture and history. After years of designing itineraries/scripts for tour companies, I’ve embarked on my own to offer a more personal, authentic experience. Unlike the generic tours provided by companies that subcontract local guides, my tours are thoughtfully crafted and full of personal insights and stories.

I just started on Tripadvisor/Viator so there are only about 10 reviews (all 5-star!), but I have over 65 reviews on Get Your Guide (also all 5 out of 5). Take a look if you want to see the reviews, but prices are cheaper if you book here.

My average tour group is 2-4. Private tour vibes, with group tour prices.

Suitable for:
